CAP IMMIGRATION NOW
Australia needs hard immigration caps, not vague promises.
Put Australians first.
A leak from Sussan Ley’s office revealed to voters the shallow immigration policy she was going to put forward. A 3 year ban on 37 ‘terrorist’ regions of 13 countries. When tallied up her ban would lower migration in this country by a measly 5,000 per year.
This is a drop in the ocean.
Now under Angus Taylor, the new Shadow Immigration Minister, Jonathon ‘Jonno’ Duniam, has said nothing on the issue of migration. Senator ‘Jonno’ seems to care more about international students than his own constituents.
In his last role as Shadow Education Minister, the Tasmanian Senator walked back any reduction in international student numbers because the party would "speak to unis and peak bodies" and "take the community on the journey."
Jonno was asked if he stood by the 240,000 yearly target of the Labor government. He said, "I’m not committing to a number," because he was afraid of how his tone might offend international students.
Jonno said “There was … a tone around the immigration debates … that didn’t sit well with a number of multicultural communities and electorates across the country."
Tasmania hosts just 10,000 of Australia’s 884,000 international students. Yet the concerns that appear to weigh most heavily on Senator Duniam are not those of his local constituents, but those of university peak bodies and international education interests.
International students seem to be the primary group the new Shadow Immigration Minister is determined to be sensitive toward.
Now, Taylor’s Shadow Cabinet is reportedly budgeting for a policy that would allow international students to work up to 30 hours per week during term, which equates to four working days each week.
That means 884,000 people working four days a week during term and up to seven days a week outside of term, all competing for Aussie jobs and Aussie rentals.
Australians are facing a housing crisis.
Australians are facing wage stagnation.
Australians are facing infrastructure strain.
Revive Australia’s position is clear.
Net migration should be negative for the foreseeable future. Australia needs a prolonged period where more people leave than arrive so that housing, wages and infrastructure can stabilise and Australians are no longer competing in their own country for basic economic security. If that means millions of people must go, so be it.
Minor trims and symbolic bans are not enough. Australia requires a hard cap, a binding annual intake number, and a sustained period of negative net migration.
Revive Australia has had enough of vague stances from the Coalition. We want hard numbers.
The LNP need to go hard on immigration or they will force voters to walk with their feet to One Nation or any other party willing to set a hard cap.
Tell Senator Duniam you want a strong policy on immigration. Tell Jonno you want him to commit to a number.
